I think this bag is a real waste of cash. Let me explain, point-by-point: First of all, the strap has this huge, non-functional pad that does bend to conform to the shouler, and slips off easily, making it too hard to carry over the shoulder. (I swapped it with an old computer bag strap that worked much better.) Next, the velcro wrapping that holds the handles together is too long, and you have to fiddle with it to hook it together. The two pouches at the end of the bag are fine, except that the lower pouch is too close, making it difficult to easily open and close. The material is very noisy as it brushes against cotton trousers, and since they saw fit to use white thread on a black bag, it really does look like crap! I truly cannot find anything nice to say about this bag. Go to Lands End, buy a black briefcase from them, save money, and be much, much happier. I know, because after just one trip with the MPB, I did!! The Maxpedition bag is now behind the seat in my tuck, where no one can see it, holding misc tools, jumper cables, rags, and oil.

I looked into lots of bags and picked this based on my specific needs.

    What it does well:

I carry lots of little gadgets when I travel- calculator, 2 cell phones, iPod, kindle with related plugs, wires etc.- plus sunglasses, toiletries for the plane, pens, a laptop and usually a few file folders or binder and moleskine. Most bags don’t have enough storage for small things unless you throw them into a big compartment. The small pockets on the ends and sides of this bag keep things organized and you don’t end up with something heavy sitting on something delicate. There is also plenty of storage for pens (7!) cards, paper small notebooks and pads. So it hold a lot of things without being too big- which keeps its packed weight down. It even has velcro loops that are great for carrying a small umbrella. I know previous reviewers disagree, but I like the strap. The pad is think and comfortable for when the bag is full. Seems very well made and strong.

    Issues:

It says up to 15″ laptops, but my 14″ Dell pretty much fills the space. It would be tight with 15″. Check your measurements before buying. The padding is OK, but not as thick as some computer bags I’ve had. It has a surplus military look, even in black (with grey stiching), so its not as formal as leather of all black ballistic nylon if thats an issue. I think it was designed as a (gun) range bag, so it might have a few straps, loops etc. that don’t translate well. While I like the double zipper top, there is a velcro tab at the end to seal the main compartment which is hard to line up correctly unless the bag is full. Also while the build quality is good, they do use coil zippers instead of the much stronger chain zippers. That could affect longevity. Also the handles on the bag have a grip that velcros them together. The velcro holds so well as to be a bit of a pain when opening and closing the bag frequently. Also I agree the lower zippered pouch on the end is hard to access. They should have put the zipper on the side.

I gave the bag 5 starts because the bag does exactly what I purchased it for, and the few negatives don’t bother me. That said if you:

    - want to carry tons of stuff (this is not a bag for students with lots of books)

    - need to look very professional/formal

    - want a soft, messenger bag look (This bag is very structured/stiff)

this is not the bag for you.

I’ve been using this bag for a couple of weeks, and just returned from my first airline trip with it. Plenty of room for the laptop, power adapter and cords, data line, three books, notebook, cell phone charger, keys, ID badge, toiletries kit, spare pair of glasses, safety glasses…you get the idea by now.

All pockets were easily accessible except for the lower one on the end with two, but it wasn’t much trouble to get to it; I just put less-frequently used items in it.

The strap squeaked a bit when hanging from my shoulder fully loaded, but so did the similar components on my Halliburton case when I used to carry it on trips. [The Halliburton case, by the way, did not have nearly the capacity of the MPB.]

All in all, I’m very pleased.
